Students were asked to brainstorm everything they know about explorers. This could be names of explorers, what they do/have done, areas that were discovered, and methods of discovery.

Colonization
Colonization: The action or process of settling among and establishing control over the indigenous people of an area.
As a class, we brainstormed what the potential positives to colonization would be and what the potential negatives of colonization would be. Students had to access their prior knowledge and current understanding of colonization to answer. Each student was given a stack of post-it notes and had to write a point on each. Students needed to think historically and see this topic from both the point of view of colonizers and the colonized. Once they came up with an idea they had to either stick it on the "Positives of Colonization" poster or the "Negatives of Colonization" poster. The answers our class came up with are below:
