Ancient Sumerians invented a system of writing known as cuneiform. This style of writing evolved from pictures of objects to a stylized system of symbols. This system came about from the need to document donations of goods going in and out of ziggurats within cities. Documenting the goods allowed for priests to know what was available. Overtime, writers needed to shorten the process and moved from drawing pictures of the donations to creating a easier symbol to represent that item.
