Poverty

What does Poverty mean to me?

Visual Brainstorm

Students were tasked with creating a visual brainstorm about what poverty means to them. Below are some examples of student work:

Equality vs. Equity

Our class went through the "Band-aid" activity. Each student was given a illness or injury. Students had to act like they were experiencing that injury. One by one, students approached the "doctor" (teacher) to receive treatment. Each student received a band-aid to fix their problem. After going through this activity, students were asked to reflect by answering the questions below in paragraphs.

Paragraph Responses:

Visual Representation:

  1. What does it mean to be fair? Is equality or equity more fair and why?
  2. Would you say the world is "fair" or equal? Explain your thinking.

Poverty Simulation

Open the following website and go through the entire simulation. You can choose different family situations or different cities in Canada. Can you make the month?
https://new.makethemonth.ca/new.makethemonth.ca/
Picture
After participating in this simulation, answer the following questions:
- Did you make the month or did you run out of money?
- How did you feel about not being able to afford things you wanted or needed?
- Was there a particular situation where you felt helpless? If so, what was it and why?
- What do you think people experiencing poverty do when they are not able to meet their basic needs?
