Canada uses the First Past the Post system. Each district has a candidate elected to be Members of Parliament. The political party with the most Members of Parliament elected becomes the government. The political party with the second highest number of Members of Parliament elected becomes the official opposition. In Canada these two positions are usually held by the Liberal and Conservative parties.
